Main House Steading

Initially our brief for this project was to convert a former steading into a 3 bedroom house but on closer inspection, the walls were deemed in a too poor and unstable condition to make them worthwhile retaining. The steading was not listed so we set about carefully demolishing the majority of the walls and setting the stone aside for using on the new house. We opted to use Beco Wallform for the main structure of the house and faced this with either a combination of reclaimed stone and render. The focal point of the house is a glazed wing that wraps the southern corner. Inside this is located an open plan kitchen, sitting and dining areas, all on split levels in order to define the spaces. The house has a farmhouse feel to it and in the entrance hall is an impressive oak staircase and landing lit from above by a cupola. The result is a house flooded with light - one of the key elements to the brief. The house also contains all the ancillary spaces one would expect in a farmhouse, Utility Room, Boot Room, Cloakroom and Office. The original walls not demolished to make way for the new house were consolidated to form a walled garden to the whole complex.
