Morridgehall Revisited

You can always tell when a project is of quality design: it improves with age. This is clearly the case at The Cottage, Morridgehall in the Scottish Borders. The large extension we designed has bedded down well and the materials have started to age wonderfully. “That is why we like to use natural materials”, says Architect, David Johnson, “they weather so beautifully and improve so much over time. They keep the building alive and dynamic”. The extension and original cottage look so fine together, needing each other to bring out each other's qualities.

But it is not all down to the design. The client has been working hard over the past four years, adding to the landscaping with stone terraces, raised flower beds and rubble stone walls. The whole building now has a relationship with the external area and surrounding features that makes it look completely at ease, despite its contemporary style.
