This is one of the core functions of the practice. We design and manage refurbishment projects, large and small, simple and complex.
Building refurbishment requires, in our opinion, a different focus to the process of constructing a new building. When, in the past, architects experienced in new building projects turned their hands to the refurbishment of existing buildings they often adopted a heavy handed approach, with a cumbersome "design team" and a burning desire to stamp their mark on the building concerned which often bordered on disrespect and disdain for the work of previous generations. This attitude is still prevalent in many countries and is not extinct in Britain.
At GLM, for refurbishment projects, we prefer to provide a comprehensive project management lead service in which design, cost control, quality and programme management are treated as a unified whole. This results in a more nimble approach and a more accountable one. Building surveyors play a key role in refurbishment projects with their understanding of building defects, building technologies, repair techniques and commercial realities. Whilst recognising the importance of good design, we try to give equal weight to project delivery.
